Canada Work Permits

Work Permits

If you’re coming to London from outside of Canada, you may need a work permit in order to find employment.

International Students intending to work while they study in Canada also require a work permit, in addition to their study permit and Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization. Learn more about student work requirements.

Note: Permanent residents do not require work permits. Refugees do and can receive assistance through some of the settlement services.

Types of Work Permits

  • Open work permits allow you to work for any employer in Canada, except those on a specific list and/or those providing erotic services.
  • Employer-specific work permits allow you to work within specific conditions for a specific employer.

For more information about work permits or to find out if you qualify, review the Government of Canada website.

For youth, consider the International Experience Canada Program Permit. There are a variety of programs in Canada for young people ages 18-35 (for some countries ages 18-30) around the world, who are interested in working and/or traveling in Canada. These programs include working holidays, work exchanges, professional internships, and more. In most cases, this is a one-time opportunity with a specific time period of work.

Extending Your Permit

Work permits in Canada have a time limit. If your work permit is going to expire, you can complete an application for an extension of that permit (which would allow you to continue working for a longer period of time). You can apply for a permit extension here.

Alternatively, a special application for a “bridging permit” could extend your working period while you wait for the results of a permanent residence application. To find out if you’re eligible for a bridging permit, follow the questionnaire and learn your next steps.

International Experience Program permits are only extended in rare instances. To learn more about those extensions, visit the International Experience Program website.

Job Licensing

Depending on the type of job you want to apply for, you may need to get licensed to work in Ontario. Typically, these jobs include those that require certification from your home country, such as careers in medicine or skilled trades.

The Access Centre for Regulated Employment gives information and help with applications to internationally trained individuals wanting to get licensed to work in Ontario’s regulated professions, and for tradespersons who need to apply for the Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA). The Access Centre can also give counselling, funding and loans, and other resources to foreign job seekers. “Regulated professions” are careers that require licenses, some examples include:

  • Accounting
  • Animal and Veterinary Medicine
  • Architecture
  • Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Counselling and Therapy
  • Dentistry
  • Education and Teaching
  • Engineering
  • Laboratory Technology
  • Law and Legal Services

Why Consider Being a Truck Driver in Canada?

Being a long-haul truck driver in Canada has plenty of perks, including a salary of between $55, 000 and $70, 000 per year (as well as some bonus payments). The industry varies in terms of what you can do as a truck driver which also moves the pay scale up or down accordingly. For this reason, we recommend jobs that cover the longer routes cross-country which guarantee you a higher salary and more benefits. The schedule is fairly flexible with some trips taking place over several months or for just a week. You also have the opportunity to negotiate with your employer to determine how long you would like to work and how many days you will have off in a month.

Truck driving in Canada can also be an interesting way of seeing the country’s cityscapes and wilderness. Pass by wonders like the Rockies with its neighboring forests and fjords as well as the major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, all destinations that need resources delivered. There’s also a lot more social interaction than one might think. Take hold of opportunities to become a team driver where you interchange with other truckers around the country or even pair up with a spouse who can travel (and drive) around the scenic landscapes with you.

What are the Next Steps to Become a Truck Driver in Canada?

The process of how to immigrate to Canada as a truck driver is fairly simple once you’re aware of the different programs. In order to be considered from the start, you will need a valid license and a clean driving and criminal record. You will need to do a medical screening with a professional, train according to Canadian truck-driving laws, and pass a written test before applying.

Most truck drivers searching for employment in Canada begin by entering the Temporary Foreign Worker Program that gets them access to the country to begin working for a Canadian employer. When applying for this, you already need to have all the above requirements in place or underway to be considered. The employer will then extend an offer and once this is in motion, you are invited to apply for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. For the purpose of fast-track (within 6 months) immigration, you need to create a profile for the Express Entry system.

Before or while working for a Canadian employer on this temporary basis, you can apply online with an ‘Expression of Interest’ to a specific province in Canada. If you meet the criteria, the province will then invite you to apply to a stream within the Provincial Nominee Program for a provincial nomination. An example of a provincial subcategory is the ‘Long-Haul Truck Driver Project’, part of the Provincial Nominee Program’s Saskatchewan Experience Category. This route is dedicated to getting trucking firms to bring long-haul truck drivers through to Canada on a Temporary Foreign Worker Permit. Once you’ve gone through the above process and met the criteria for the chosen province (which is subject to change), the province will nominate you to be considered for residency. This adds 600 points to your ranking under the Comprehensive Ranking System score of your profile. These points help you rank higher against other applicants in the Express Entry system’s pool, which boosts your chance of being drawn with the next round of successful applicants.

We follow an arrangement for migration that appropriates the advantages of movement the nation over. We select workers for their financial commitment, for their philanthropic necessities and to rejoin families.

Consistently, we set focuses for the quantity of migrants we permit into the country for every movement classification. We give general society, regions and regions, organizations and associations that assist outsiders with getting comfortable Canada a chance to tell us their opinion on the objectives before they are settled.

In 2021, our objective is 401,000 workers. Of these, around 60% fall under the financial class, which will assist the Canadian economy with recuperating from COVID-19.

Looking forward, Canada intends to invite 411,000 migrants in 2022 and 421,000 outsiders in 2023. This works out to practically 1% of our population.

Regions and regions select a developing number of outsiders in the monetary classification, also. Under the Canada-Quebec Accord, Quebec is liable for choosing financial settlers and a portion of the outcasts that come to the region.

As of late, Canada has changed the proportion of various types of workers to zero in favoring the financial classification.
